help? why does my gallery keep creating photo caches at various sizes

Hey guys really needing your advice here.I have just got my Xperia Z2 and am really loving it however I'm coming across a strange problem in my gallery. I'm taking photos and turned camera to save on my old sandisk 64gb card which I previously had on an htc one. Now I can see both my new photos and old photos fine in the gallery app the problem I'm having is the internal memory keeps creating thumbnails rgb_565 of all my photos then adding them to my gallery which is causing me to have duplicated photos at various poor quality I'm then having to go into details to find the orginal shot I've tried everything but they keep coming back is anybody else getting this? Or know how to fix this? In advance thanks

I think Brox that maybe your old HTC may have stored additonal (hidden) thumbnail media files that the Z2 is picking up.

Maybe try this (This is erasing data to ensure you have kept what you want, ok?):

  1. Turn off your Z2, and remove the SD card
  2. Mount the SD card on a computer and MOVE the files you want to that computer.  Use the computer to see if there's any hidden or system objects within your files that you don't recognise; move them out of the way so that you don't copy them back later.
  3. Put SD card back into Z2, turn phone on and erase SD card (settings / Storage / Erase SD Card)
  4. Go to Apps, swipe across to All, sort by size (dots menu top right hand corner) and locate Media Storage.  Clear data.
  5. Plug USB cable in and copy files from step 2 back to SD card.
  6. Wait an hour or two whilst media is rescanned; phone will get hot.
  7. Turn phone off and on ...

Unfortunately that.hasn't worked Jon what I can tell you is that the repeats of photos are actually thumbnails of various sizes. I bought a new micro sd card today to be safe and totally reset the phone and new card everything seemed fine took me hours to download apps etc went out took some photos got home turned phone off and when I turned back on back were the thumbnails of various sizes.in my gallery they seem to have an internal cache problem and more than a few people are having this problem it appears 😞

Can you please clarify what you are doing to delete the photos?

Brox,

Might be worth trying a third party image viewer like QuickPic (free) and see if that finds the original pictures & the additional thumbnails.  That may answer whether it's the Gallery app or Android having the issue.

Thanks Jon for the help from what I can understand there seems to be a bug affecting some Xperia s not all but if you check media section there are more than a few people seeking help. So last night I completely wiped my phone upgraded my Xperia through the computer. I have bought a new micro sd card and as long as I don't seem to use Sony memories or I don't turn my phone off it won't happen. The strange thing is that these thumbnails appear from an internal memory source which I have found impossible to find I wonder if Sony are aware of this glitch thanks Jon for your help

Hey @Sam I'm having to go to folders in gallery go into the thumbnails and delete them all I have worked out they are being generated internal memory and when you delete them if you switch your phone off and then back on again they reappear again?

That is odd as it should not be able to generate thumbnails again unless the original image exists in some form on the device. If you open the image in question via Album, tap the menu Button then "Details" is the date listed for the thumbnail the same as when you just rebooted the phone?

Hey Sam thank you for getting back to me ok what I did was have to upgrade file commander as the thumbnails are on file path internal memory-Dcim and that's where they are I'm taking it there shouldn't be thumbnails? All the thumbnails are duplication of the Of new stuff I put on my brand new Sony sd card and have ether transfered there or have taken with my Z2 camera appreciating the help with this and look forward to hearing from you I should mention that everytime I've deleted them before if you turn off the phone then restart they all reappear?

There is a thumbnails folder in the DCIM section as this is what the Album application uses to store the thumbnails for preview. However these thumbnails should get created when you have the original image stored on the phone or SD Card as well. With this being the case are there duplicates of any of these thumbnails that have a different file path?
