I think Brox that maybe your old HTC may have stored additonal (hidden) thumbnail media files that the Z2 is picking up.
Maybe try this (This is erasing data to ensure you have kept what you want, ok?):

Might be worth trying a third party image viewer like QuickPic (free) and see if that finds the original pictures & the additional thumbnails. That may answer whether it's the Gallery app or Android having the issue.
That is odd as it should not be able to generate thumbnails again unless the original image exists in some form on the device. If you open the image in question via Album, tap the menu Button then "Details" is the date listed for the thumbnail the same as when you just rebooted the phone?

There is a thumbnails folder in the DCIM section as this is what the Album application uses to store the thumbnails for preview. However these thumbnails should get created when you have the original image stored on the phone or SD Card as well. With this being the case are there duplicates of any of these thumbnails that have a different file path?
