HD movies on Google Play

Hi guys,

I've got the Xperia Z1 C6903 and I'm trying to play HD movies I've brought on Google Play but it says HD movies are not supported on my device. I thought this was a bit odd I've emailed Google and they said:

"I am happy to clarify with you that your desired device (Sony Xperia Z1 C6903) is able to play High definition movies. "

With this in mind i've completed a full factory reset of the device and I still get the same error.

Is it possible for someone to confirm if my Z1 should be capable of playing back HD movies and if so what would be the next best step in getting the movies to work? At the moment they only appear to be standard definition.

Whilst the phone itself is more than capable to playing HD Movies, certain services may not support it. In this circumstance you would be best to raise an escalation through the Google Play services given the nature of the problem.

Hi Sam,

Like I say I've already spoken to Google and they say the device should be fine to playback HD movies.

To take things further with them what would you suggest as they say speak to Sony?

Probably crap Sony software as usual. But have you tried playing the movies with MX Player ? Think you also download some codecs for that but you can see that when you download MX Player.

I noticed that some clips i made with my GoPro in 1080P would NOT open in Sonys "movie" application.

But after i installed MX Player it worked. Also in that i had to select what audio track i wanted even though there was only one and tick a box saying something i cant remember now ;D. Think you can figure that one out once you installed the player. Its free aswell.

Hi,

No the problem was never resolved.

In the end i think Google said regardless of HD support it may still not be possible to view HD movies on the Z1 due to content restrictions that Sony or other studios have applied, so in the end i stopped buying movies from Google Play.
