Can you clarify what happens when you try to make a Google account within the device? is there an error message if so can you please provide this message?

I used to get this error with my Xperia X10 (sometimes I still do) that you can't create a NEW gmail account from your phone

I suggest that you repair the phone software using PC Companion: 

http://www.sonymobile.com/update

Then login/create your Google account in the startup guide that is shown the first time you start your phone after the update/repair of the phone software. It should solve your problem.
