Gmail is not autosyncing

I havea  two year old sony ericsson xperia and I can not make gmail the synchronization work. It has been working up until half a year ago. Now I am getting the message await synchronization, but then nothing happens. Could it be that my inbox is to full? There is supposed to be a funciton whereby i can limit the synchroniszation to the latest 4 days, but I am hnot able to access this function. Should I delete the whole gmail application from the phnone and reinstall it? Should I delete the whole gmail inbox which I don´t want to do?

When your in the Gmail App touch the top right Gmail sign to get to the labels and everything.

Scroll down to "Settings". tap on your Email account.

Then there should be a few settings regarding synchronisation.

This is should be where you can limit the synchronisation to the latest 4 days.
