Earphones don't work with my Xperia Go?

I have used my Xperia Go ST27i for quite some time, but recently after the update to JellyBean 4.1.2, everytime i try to plug in my (3rd party) earphones, occasionally it works well, but many times, the earphones simply don't work with the phone. The music/audio simply plays through the internal speakers instead of the earphones although it is nicely plugged in. I did not have this problem while i was using ICS. Any solution to this problem? Its frustrating when the earphones don't work.

Well, my first guess would be a faulty connector in the phone but if it worked fine before the update it might be related to software.

First step would be to repair the phone software via PC Companion. If the problem persists after the repair, send the phone in to a service center for repair. Contact your local Xperia Support for more information.

Apparently repairing my phone through PC Companion did not solve the problem, I am also pretty sure it is a software issue.
