My Acro S running latest build of ICS will dim for no apparent reason. I just got the phone (new) a couple weeks ago. My wife has the Xperia S which is basically the same phone and her phone does not do this.
The Power Saver app is NOT on ... ambient light sensor appears to be working as I went into the service menu with my phone and wife's phone at the same time and the sensors (both phones) were responding to the light in the same manner. Display brightness is set the same on both phones.
If I power off my phone then it will come back in brightness to match my wife's phone but after several minutes it dims for no reason. Battery level is the same on both phones too.

Do you have any cover or screen protector put on that may interfere with the light sensor? Clean the surface where the the sensors are located so you don't have any dirty or dust that might interfere.
If the phone is turned against the light it will dim down the brightness.
If you think there's something wrong with your phone you can try to repair the phone software using the program PC Companion or you can try to do a factory reset:
Alexander,
I think you are confused about how auto light sensors react. When going into bright sunlight any display with an auto brightness feature will get BRIGHTER ... so you can see it in the sun. When going to darker environment the display will dim down so as to not be so bright and harsh on the user's eyes.
As to your question on the sensor itself ... I said in my first post that I went into the service menu with my phone and my wife's (xperia S) side by side and the sensor values were nearly identical. The sensor itself is working correctly.
I am finding that if I power down my phone when it starts "acting up" that then it will work fine for several days. So appears to be software flaw/memory leak who knows. My phone is stock as it came from the factory not rooted. Only Play Store apps are installed (trusted sources).
