Hi JT0099,

You could try disabling the original App, this way when you clear any defaults the original app will not show up.

Menu > Settings > Apps > All > Messaging > Disabled.

let me know if this helps.

You can also try settings-apps-all,tap on settings (3 dots) and reset app preferences. You are selecting a default,it won't do that by itself.

if i diable the app then i cannot use the app. I just do not want it to launch by default. For example i am using an external dialer that can quick launch to text a person. However i set choose whatsapp and tap "always" when prompt to choose an app and it will revet back to sms app instead of whatsapp.

Do you have an internet connection every time you use any of the messages apps? I believe whatsapp requires one.

Try the disable option above, however once you have disabled the app, Enable it afterwards, this will clear any data that may be causing the mix up.

Make sure to back up the SMS messages as they will likely be removed. This can be done with the internal Backup & restore app on the device.

Install Google Messenger

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging&hl=en

and then disable the messaging app.
