data spike with Facebook

Can anyone help with the amount of Data used by facebook, and all of it's extensions - FB inside xperia, facebook calynder sync, contacts list having FB status next to the contact etc.

I upgraded from xperia mini ( on android 2.1) to xperia s about 6 weeks ago, and have experienced a data spike from an average of 300mb  per month Data to over 1gb.

checked with the carrier that there wasn't a billing problem, and their tech guys said that the handset didn't have a problem.

I downloaded (over wifi!!) onavo data manager, which told me that FB was the main cuplrit (340mb) , along with "android os + others" (190mb).

speaking to my operator (orange uk) customer services on the phone and face to face, they are surprised how much data is being used, and when I explain that I'm not on FB any more than once a day for 10 mins at lunch, and the rest of the time I use it is sofa-lizeing at home on WIFI, they couldn't find a reason for using that much data.

Is this amount of data use normal for Sony xperia S? do I have a faulty hand set? will an software re-boot do the trick?

For the last 6 weeks I have had an app killer running anyway, killing apps merrily when the screen goes off, but this still has had no effect.

the ONLY solution that I have had success with is to remove the FB account from the settings menu.

now - like a spider that has been hit with a hammer, I have all the FB extensions scattered throughout the handset - contacts awaiting pics, and status updates, timescape staring out blankly at me, calender entries empty, all waiting for me to forget and log into a service with my FB login (drawsomething etc) when the spiders body will spring back to life and start devouring my data plan again.

what am I doing wrong? what can I do better, and what intervention I haven't thought of is needed?

I don't like spiders much , please help.

cheers,

Stan

I think it will be impossible to say how much data Facebook and all it's features in Xperia S will use. This is depends on the usage and what you sync.

With Xperia S you can sync all your Facebook pictures which I believe is the thing which consumes most data in regards of Facebook sync.

Check what data usage you'll get just logging into the Facebook app not using the Facebook inside Xperia feature. If it remains high I think that you will have to check with your operator again and perhaps also do a software repair on the phone via PC Companion just to be sure.

Thank you Johan, I have repaired the software via PC companion as suggested, and disabled FBinside xperia.

This has helped, as it now only costs 1mb each time I open the native FB app, and it's not polling all the time for updates too.

I hope that this is the last of it, as I was on the brink of throwing it back at Orange, and going back to my ld phone.

Does 1mb per launch sound about right?  is there a way of getting the facebook inside xperia to only update when requested, as opposed to all the time? will this be fixed by the ICS release in June?

lots of questions, and if you have any answers, i'm sure lots of other people woudl like to know too. Thanks,

Hello Again Johan, still not a good solution, I diabled the fb inside xperia, and still consumed 3mb per fb launch. a 20 min FB session cost me 16mb!

so the only solution that is viable at present is to use a lightweight browser to access face book.

I am thoroughly dissapointed at this, as there is no way to have the sony integration without the full FB access as well. and no way to restrict polling picture gallery frequency to reduce data usage.

I've sent messages to FB to see if they have a version optimised for low data useage on mobiles, but won't hold my breath, as purple is not a good colour for me!
