I don't want Google app. And I am not using its search bar on the homescreen. I went to xda and saw how nexus users cured this headache. I tried safe mode and disabling Google app yet this 'couldnt add widget' message keeps appearing.
Please help me how to solve this one.
Go to Settings -> Apps -> Google App -> Force Stop, Clear Cache, restart phone.
Thanks for trying to help me out. I tried all the steps that were mentioned on XDA (hardly any resource there for Z3C anyway). I also activated safe mode and did the whole data wipe, disable etc etc but still that ghost bar saying 'couldn't add widget' never goes.
I did read some forums about this issue affecting Nexus and Moto devices. In those cases people just cleaned the cache and wiped the data and then restarted, and the thing was gone from the homescreen.
Which brings to this: the widget bug is unsolvable on Xperia phone. Even XDA has no clue about how to cure this headache from Z3C and other Z series.
Now I will attempt one last time via adb way. Will pm hide the Google App and any related services and see what happens. Otherwise I am giving my Z3C to my little cousin and perhaps get an iPhone after using Sony for more than a decade. Thing is it is so frustrating that Sony devs don't know about this widget issue with the Lollipop update. What's worse is that they are keeping mum. Is this how you make people buy one of the best waterproof compact androids out there and let users go out on a limb?
this worked on a gen 2 moto e, thank you
Try using Gravitybox.
Gravitybox > Miscellaneous Tweaks > Search bar visibility
Set to Hide and remove space.
That will get rid of that annoyance.
