I emailed sony support a few days ago about the warranty of my Xperia Z1 handset.
I'm experiencing an issue whereby the battery will report that its anywhere between 20 and 60% and suddenly drop to 0% and shutdown. If I turn it back on, it'll often report at 1% but then remain usable for a significantly longer period of time than you would expect if it was truely at 1% charge.
My device is still within the 2 year warranty period and have been told that I can send it back for repair, but the support email failed to clarify if battery faults are actually covered. I'm reluctant to send it back if not as I've only got a few weeks longer left on my contract and I dont want to have to pay the return or repair fee.
In the warranty documentation it says:
"Our warranty Subject to the conditions of this Limited Warranty, Sony warrants this Product to be free from defects in design, material and workmanship at the time of its original purchase by a consumer. This Limited Warranty will last for a period of two (2) years as from the original date of purchase of the Product for your mobile device, and for a period of one (1) year following the original purchase date of the Product for all original accessories (such as the battery, charger or handsfree kit) which may be delivered with your device."
My reading of this is that "accessories" considered to be those bits that are shipped alongside a handset, and even though it specifically mentions the battery, I'm confused in this case as the battery is concealed within the device so is it still considered an accessory?
Could any sony employee's clarify this or has anyone else on the forum had experience of sending a handset in for repair with a concealed battery?
Many Thanks
Ben
you should contact your local Xperia care for clarification, perhaps that was written when Xperias used to have removable batteries.
@uliwooly Thanks for your input, but I've already emailed them and just got a fairly generic response back after 3 days and their online chat is now closed - hence the reason I thought I would reach out for the experience of the community.
The email I got just basically outlined four possiblities:
Just happened to stumble back across my old post and thought I would update it to help any future people who might be experiencing the same/similar issue.
The problem was covered by the warranty and the handset was repaired and returned to me within 7 or 8 working days - however, the return slip didn't actually details which parts (if any) were replaced so I still cant confirm for definate if the battery was covered under the warranty, or if it was some other part in the device that was faulty.
