Contacts preventing calls

I have an Xperia U that has been wel looked after and is in good condition.  When I try to access either contacts or make a phone call I get an error The application Contacts has stopped unexpectedly.  Please try again. It also mentions a sub-process - com.sonyericsson.android.social.phonebook.

This happens everytime.  I have switched the phone off, removed the battery and removed the sim but this doesn't resolve it.

Any ideas?

Do you have a taskiller or antivirus?

Check my thread below, same problem. I think it's quite widespread.
At the moment, my best guess is that a recent auto-update has messed something up.
