contacts missing

yes, as the subject suggests.... i lost all of my contacts all of a sudden, it was there like an hour ago, then it's gone... 

messages still exist, from all apps, such as whatsapp, wechat, etc.

it's an xperia go, running on android 4.1.2

any help is appreciated

First of all you should check the filter function for contacts. You can do this if you go to Contacts > Menu button (the one in the bottom right corner) > Filter > Unmark Online contacts if it's marked. Also check under Local contact so "All other contacts" is marked, and do the same for e.g. your Google account if you have saved your contacts here.

okay, thanks for the reply, got the numbers back, but they're all listed as unknowns........ 

is there any way to get the names back without typing them one by one?

Unfortunately i'm not aware of any function that can correct the names, so you need to add them manually.

A tip would be to back up your contacts to your internal storage/SD-card when you are done. You can do this if you go to Contacts > Menu button > Back up contacts > Internal storage/SD card. They should then be saved with number and name and if you lose your contacts again, you can import them.
