Compass not working in most apps

I am having problems finding a basic compass app that works with the Xperia Tablet Z.  So far I have only seen the compass working in Google Maps.  All other apps including standalone compass apps just show a fixed reading of 0 degrees.

Does anyone know of an app that works?

I got some movement on the compass when I used the Compass app from Catch.com

Maybe you have to calibrate your compass. You can do that by move your tablet in a figure eight (8) in the air.

I have downloaded the suggested app but still have no movement on the compass.  I have also tried calibration but still no luck.

Ok.  Problem fixed, but still don't know what went wrong.  I downloaded a couple of apps that give raw information on the sensors installed.  Both apps reported the magnetometer as not present, hence the lack of working compass.

So, in the usual IT style I powered the tablet right down and then restarted it.  Voila! The magnetometer now appeared again and the compass apps are working.

I have been just suspending and resuming the tablet for a few weeks, so I don't know if there is a bug in the initialization as the tablet switches on.  I'll report back if I find any more information.
