Clock display when phone locked?

just got hold of an xperia z, but i cant find a feature that allows you to have a clock/notifications when the screen is locked.

all you get is a blank screen, to activate the main lock screen menu you have to press the button on the side(this can also be disabled and pressing the buttong goes straight into the phone menu)

all other phones i have had recently had this feature and most other android phones from what i can see have this as well.

am i missing something really simple here?

all i want is to be able to wake up and glance at my phone, look at the time and see if i have any missed calls or messages, now i have to fumble about in the dark, press a button to see the time and if i have missed calls or messages.

there appears to be no app for this either, have spent nearly 5 hours searching!

any ideas?

There is not possible to show a clock and notifications on the locked screen when the phone is in standby as standard. The only way is to activate the display with the power button. Maybe you will find some apps for the feature you seek on Google Play.
