Cell reception

Hello!
I just got my Xperia on may 13, it's brand new. But I've noticed the cell reception is awful! I had a cheap Motorola before this and usually had full bars. Now with my Xperia, I'm lucky if I have 1 or 2 bars.
Is there a reason why the reception is different? Is there a way to make it stronger? Or is it just a model problem?

Settings > about phone > status > signal strength test this on both phones, don't let the bars fool you.

Also, how old is the SIM card?

is it a MICRO SIM card or a trimmed SIM card? 

Do you have any antivirus apps?

No antivirus app, mini Sim - about 2.5 years old (same one I used with my
my other Phone).
the signal is 0dbm and 99asu... But I don't know what that means haha
