Cannot play music on headphones - unsure if smart connect or hardware the problem

When I try to listen to music on my phone by plugging my headphones in smart connect triggers the music app and it plays briefly, then it does one of several things:

1) the music suddenly comes from the phone's speakers even when the headphones are still connected

2) if I bump the headphone wire plug or it twists in the jack in any way it lowers the volume or acts as described in 1

3) if it plays from the speakers and I unplug the headphones and plug them back in the music starts playing in the headphones with smart connect, but only very briefly then the volume lowers by itself till almost inaudible

I asked in my mobile supplier's store and they advised me it was because I wasn't using the headphone supplied with the phone, and to try others. Although he didn't explicitly say so he basically accused me of buying counterfeit headphones even though they look like Sony headphones to me, and the store I bought them in swears they're legit. He said, if that doesn't work, backup everything, and try a factory reset. I know he was wrong about the headphones though, because I dug out the headphones that came with the phone, and still the same. I also borrowed my father's headphone and the same.

So, do I need to do a factory reset, and if so how do I do that. Also, I have downloaded sony bridge for mac to backup my phone, but it says it will only backup local data, not anything on my sd card. So I backed up using sony bridge for mac, and then switched the USB connectivity to mass storage, and copied and pasted everything on the device into a folder on a portable drive. I also made a backup of the bridge backup and placed it beside the folder with the sd card backup. I was also told by sony support that there's no way to backup my apps, that they are all connected to my gmail a/c, so I will just have to go back into the Play store and reinstall each one manually after the reset, although at least I won't have to pay for the paid app's again thankfully. There is aparently no way to backup any logs or data stored in my apps though. Is this true, and if not then how can I store this info? And how do I backup the usernames and passwords stored in my Chrome browser associated with all my online accounts?

Have I backed up everything correctly so far, and for the things not backed up is there a way to backup? Then once everything is safely backed up, how do I go about a factory reset, and then how do I restore the bridge backup and sd card rudimentary backup without any conflicts?

I would first try Clearing the SmartConnect app data.

How to clear data on apps.
From your Home screen

1. Tap the Application screen icon.
2. Find and tap Settings > Apps.
3. Swipe to the All tab.
4. Find and tap on the SmartConnect app.
5. Tap Force stop > Clear data.
6. Restart the phone

As for backing up everything correctly I would refer to uliwooly's Alternatives on How to backup Xperias thanks @uliwooly

@Phy, thanks for the response. I tried clearing the cache on smart connect and it didn't help.

As for backing up, do you not recommend the backup on sony bridge for mac? I didn't use the Backup & Restore app on the phone because I believe it only does backups onto the SD card, and mine is nearly full. I think I have everything backed up correctly using Sony bridge for mac, which backed up the following:

Contacts
Text messages
Settings
Calendar data
Media files such as music and videos
Photos and images

For everything on my SD card (music, photos, videos etc...) I switched the USB connectivity to mass storage and just copied and pasted everything into a folder on my portable drive.

Should I just go ahead and try a factory reset? And if so, can you tell me how do I do that please?

Try do downgrade the smart connect SW - it helped me. Over the time I learned the official SONY SW is a crap and everywhere you can you should replace it with third party application.
