Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

What would give the best photo quality for normal every day photos, 9mp or 12mp, may be a silly question but thought I would ask anyway.

there are no differecences, the only difference between both is that in 9Mpx image, the phone cut the top and bottom parts of image.

I'm also facing the same problem with the camera . i expected  camera would be better since it is 12 mp . will it works if we upgrade the firmware ?

The amount of MP is just a small portion of what makes a good picture. People always' think that the more MP the better the photo but that's not 100% true. The quality of the CCD chip and the quality/size of the lens also is very important. A high MP camera with a lower quality/smaller lens or chip also tend to make lesser pictures.

Phone camera's have tiny lenses in general, thus they capture less light than a normal camera. That's why they make lower quality pictures than a real camera with the same amount of MP. A phone could never mach up with a real camera unless they size up the lens.

The focusing problem could be fixed with better software. Unfortunate there is none.

That's not really true. 12Mp quizes more pixels in the picture, that's why it's 4:3 and 9MP is 16:9.

Hehe now it sounds like i'm a photografer. I dont even like taking pictures Dizzy_Face

Yes, have more pixels in the picture, but also the area is higher. The truth is that the image have the same DPI, then in the same area have the same pixels, and the quality is the same.

The higher resolution pic (say12 mp) can be zoomed out to lower size (say 8 mp) resulting in higher dpi/ppi, but if a lower resolution pic (8 mp)  is zoomed in beyond its original size (to 12 mp), it would result in lower dpi/ppi and hence poor quality :smileywink:!

Edit: Oops i missed that you actually are referring to 12mp (4:3) photo vs 9mp (16:9) photo sample of XS! In that case, i agree with you that both resolutions on XS camera would result in similar quality photos (having same dpi), but then again the 12 mp (4:3) photo will have a larger area captured :smileysilly:!
