Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

I still don't understand why is it so hard for you to take it to a sony repair center to get it checked, if it's hardware issue then you can get a new one or get it fixed.

The thread starter himself exchanged the phone 3 or 4 times and the problem still existed. Other people have done so too and it has not fixed the problem. I just want to get a status update to let us know that the developers acknowledge the problem and that it is being fixed, right now we don't know if they even think it's a problem or they think it works the way it should.

March is when this problem was first reported (and yes, i even used that link you posted multiple times), the developers have been told about this but we're still in the dark and we're left to guess what the problem might be and guess that a fix will come eventually, maybe.

Something as minor as "yes, we acknowledge a software error exists and will issue a fix after we get ICS out of the way", or "camera works as it should, we haven't been able to replicate the problem". Something. Anything.

each case it's different but how come you don't take your phone? the focusing problem was quite noticeable while recording videos and that seems to have improved a lot, but I still don't see your issue, you should take it to get it checked

Dear Uliwooly; I think probably you are the one who got a special handset with absouletly no problems with the camera. great enjoy you are blessed. Mine stinks and more so becasue i have come up to xperia after using a 5 mp camera from nokia n 97 mini and i guess that's a pinch better than the 12mp xperia Sony offers. Its as simple as that. The cam doesn't stand upto the hype and the one's like nokia N8 clearly over shadow it. Hopefully instead of having such a long and tiring thread. I prefer somebody from Sony to take up charge and sort this issue out whether it be with hardware or software. Don't mind but Sir uliwooly have you ever worked with Sony before this is or something liek that. Becasue you totally seem to be a Sony xupporter. I like my new sony xperia S apart from its camera. I would have loved the device if somebody could have put the n8 camera into it. It would have been awesome!!:smileylaugh:

actually there's another thread where users that don't have issues are posting, but of course if you don't have issues with your phone you wouldn't stop by this thread, do you have issues with your phone? have you taken your phone to a sony repair center?

Yes i did take it to a sony centre they said its not an issue with my hardware and they also said something exciting. They asked me to stop comparing my phones camera with an N8 camera. They said both have their own qualities. I displayed both of the phones qualities to the gentleman and then he had nothing to say. My phone is the latest in batch i guess since i bought it not even a month earlier. I have updated it to ICS. I think there is nothing much that can be done to the device. Since the sony gentleman also said something more interesting he can change the device for me if i want. I said what if it still persists, first he was struck and then he said, it shouldn't and tried to assure me but that was not good enough for me. Since i asked him to take a new phone or any that he has in stock which is unboxed, he never looked confident with the phones camera.

that is indeed interesting, you should get a new one and compare

Maybe i will goto a different sony centre this time around. Or else i have to stay content and just accept teh fact that it cannot go any better. Since i doubt if things can change with a hardware swap. I saw some pictures in thread from you too. I am afraid i can post better pictures with an N8 camera (12mp) again.
