Camera - xperia s - focusing problems and poor images

Firstly this phone is fantastic and I have already conmverted several friends from apple to sony.

Last night I though I would really test it out - went out with a few mates, each with different phones and every time the Nokia N8 took better pictures.

Honestly - my xperia took ages to focus and 5 out of 9 shots were very very poor. In direct comparision the N8 - once he had it set up, took photos faster and each one was in focus - non of this waiting while it figures out what its doing,.

In day light - mine wins no problem - in pubs and low light areas I found this phone to have major problems with focus, and tiime delay in pressing and actual capture of images --- dont get me wrong - I can take it out of my pocket - press the button and hey presto - a photo very very quick --but what is the point when its not in focus and then I have to try again, then again, by which time, my mates are laughing as they have unlocked their phone, aimed and took a good photo.

SONY -- please look into this --  is this my handset or systemic?

Looking at the response this is systemic - if this is a software issue then please sort it, if hardware - recall and replace.

For those of you with the problem - the best photos I can get are to disable face detection, scenes to OFF,,focus mode - have it on touch or infinity, metering centre. At least on these settings I get more than 1 out of 10 photos which I can use.

THIS IS STILL AN ISSUE!!! SONY PLEASE RESPOND!

This is quite irritating. The images I have posted and the ENTIRE OUT OF FOCUS video I have taken, are NOT due to user error. The camera simply could not focus.

Yes the camera works some of the time and takes great pictures, I am not debating that, but it certainly DOES NOT WORK ALL OF THE TIME and you end up stuck in a situation where you cannot take pictures.

Posting up pictures of the camera when it's working does not really help us who have the problem!!!

@subben2003, take some photos of people indoors when you're just hanging out in the evening, then count how many come out in-focus.

Notice how the very small number of people who say photos come out great are posting pictures of buildings or random objects, sometimes in bright sunlight; no photos of people and definitely none of people indoors; that should tell you something about when the problem is most evident.

Hello...

I'm Arya from Indonesia...

Um, well, I too, having the same issue like all of you... But for me, it's often took good pictures, and sometimes BAD BAD pictures...

My solution for this is... Try to focus more than one time, that should solve the problem...

By the way, I'm a big fan of Sony since 2008 (my first phone is SE C905)... But I don't believe that now the New Xperia S have lesser quality, C905 is still better...

Samples (with Xperia S):

Day...

settings: Single Autofocus, ISO 100, Exposure 0, the rest is default

Night...

Settings: Single Autofocus, ISO 100, Exposure +1.00, Flash off, the rest is default

That's my best shot... However, I have moved to HTC One X now... I'm sorry, goodbye Sony... Til we meet again when your devices are all stabilized... (Sorry for my bad English).

Yeah thats great! But i dont want to take photos of some wells and flowers and lakes. They are waiting just for snap a photo. Try to take a picture of drunken friend in the evening or friends on grill party and you will see the greatness of xperia S(ucks) in VGA quality

Again, posting saying that 'well mine works' doesn't really help the rest of us does it? Can people stop diluting this thread with good pictures so that Sony can actually see the ones with the issues and help?

We can all post whatever we want that goes with the forum rules, why wouldn't I post pictures? it works for me, the only few times i get blurry pictures is if I'm walking and taking pictures or using the quick sleep picture feature. you can't have a one sided thread, you need to see BOTH sides of the story, don't you agree?

using your same rhetoric I can say, why do you keep complaining if it works perfectly, you are just complaining at something that works fine, but that wouldn't be fair to you and users who have this issue, instead check the back of your phone and see which week it was manufactured, that way we can get somewhere instead of going at each other like you and some other users Dizzy_Face

This is a thread for people who have a problematic phone not a place to show off your photos, there are other places you can do that. There would be no thread if it worked perfectly.

I've already posted all the details of my phone at the beginning of this thread and stated the issues I have and what apps I've used to try and fix the problem.

The problem is also annoyingly intermittent, I can also take decent photographs on many occaisions, this does not mean that there is not a problem with the camera.

Sorry you're right, I was just starting to get frustrated!

Let's hope they find the problem, I'm just starting to believe that it's hardware and there isn't one. Slightly_frowning_Face
