Yes its a common problem with Xperia U in ICS.Set the camera to 3 mp and exposure value to 1 and you will be fine. And switch to normal mode instead of automatic.

Camera was bad from the start so there's nothing much you can do...try another brand or check the forums for other Sony models and see what people say. Also check gsmarena.com for some photo examples.

I don't think camera is that bad. Its not outstanding ofcourse but not bad. You should not compare a photo taken on mobile with a photo taken on digital camera. As long as you are talking about 5MP, budget priced mobile camera than xpu is doing good.

that's correct. camera quality drops significant after ICS upgrade. after upgraded mine, got my girlfriends U on 2.2.7. side by side to compare. much grainier and darker preview, great refresh lag onscreen when turning camera from side to side, focusing and snaping (same motive - same lightconditions), on 2.3.7 under 2 sec. 4.0.4. 4-6 sec. photos on 4.0.4. much darker and noisy. try it on much different settings - same thing. lowering resolution to get better pictures is absolutely ridicolous!!!

it's on SONY to deal this BIG problem on xperia U ICS but all I noticed is that SONY ignoring this last few weeks. i rolled back my U to stock 2.3.7. and now everything's fine (exept bitter taste of SONY's software development and customer service). would like to know is any improvement with new firmware release?

I'm not comparing XU with DSLR or other expensive cameras. I just wanted to take pictures at least like my old SE K610i at 2MP and without hundreds of settings which does nothing. But this XU at 5MP is under that old K610i.  I'm talking about Sony, not Huawei, ZTE or other new comers, I was expecting some quality. The videos also were very low quality until they improved the bitrate rate. So it was that hard to check the videos before sell the phone and to put the right bitrate? It's about the guys who are in charge with the camera and software that are screwing things up there. Of course, some guys like the photos as they are right now. Some guys are not very demanding...Some don't even use the camera. I bought it mostly for the camera. Bad move. See the company financial ratings after all these Xperias and you'll see if they're doing the right thing. Not to mention the updates issues and other reviews.

PS. By the way, that very persistent association with Bond in Skyfall was just a joke, the phone (Xperia T) appeares in the movie once, for 3 seconds
