Whenever I switch on the camera I get the message "camera not available".
The phone has the latest updates (2.1).
Any idea?

It has been like this since new.
I've installed the new software as well (did not work with the old software either).
How about getting another camera app? Try Vignette (free app) from Market.
Installed camera360. Still having problems. Tries to intitialises, but doesn't work.
It seems that the camera is faulty (possibly a hardware issue).
Probably sending it to the nearest SE Service Center is your only option to confirm that.
