How do I specify how many/old emails I want to keep on the phone.
When I open the mail client and want to read an old email I have to be online and reload mails from the server and the mail appear all as unread.
It also reload emails that I have deleted but still exist on the server.
HTC do not load emails from the server that is deleted on the phone but still exist on the server.

Its ICS and Im using the build in mail client, not Gmail.
Below the list of emails there is a "Load more emails" button (its a danish versions so it be named something else i the english version) and it is that button I have to press.
Right now I tried to delete most of the mail and when I pressed the "Load more emails" the once I deleted dident show up but som other old deleted emails appeared as unread.
I currently updating to 4.1.B and hope it helps.
Let us know how it turned out after updating.
No, that dident make a difference.
I just found out that every time that I press "Load more emails" it reloads older mails for one more week.
First mails received after 26 aug. Then I press once more and get mails received after 18 aug...
Then I can delete them again...
If I then leave the phone until it turn off screen and require me to unlock it will only contain emails received after 1 sep. Again... always after a saturday.
So it seems to always contain e-mail received within the current week and I have to fetch more emails from the server. In chunks of one week.
Someone seems to have a similar issue
Answer: You are using POP3. And you cannot change very much at all. Using Exchange Active Sync you can set how many emails to check for. i.e. last week or last two weeks etc..

I too have had this e-mail problem. I phoned up SE for help and they confirmed to me that the deleting e-mails is a problem with the new update which only affects POP3 accounts and not Googlemail accounts which are different. Fix: You need a way to sync emails. i.e. deleted from phone = deleted from server. Use Exchange Active Sync. Labled Exchange account here:
Steps:
1. Delete current account.
2. Add account.
3. Write in email and password.
4. Select "Manual setup"
5. Select "Exchange Active Sync"
6. Delete the pre populated "Domain\username" field and add in your full email. (with no \)
7. Leave the password field as is.
8. Find out the server for your account. For Hotmail, it's: m.hotmail.com
9. Continue with the rest of the settings as desired.
Your done. Enjoy ; )
