my new Z1 will not allow me to assign a ringtone to a contact - I am doing this correctly, and pressing "done" when, well, done! It simply won't save the setting so when anyone rings it's the standard ringtone. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance
Try to force restart the phone(power button+vol up until the phone vibrates). Also, are you using any call apps beside the default one?
Are you trying to use an audio file you have added to the phone personally and is the file stored on the internal memory or on an SD Card?

I WAS trying to use an mp3 that I had added - however, even trying with one of the pre-loadeds didn't help...and they were all on internal memory and not card.
However, all the music is now on a card - will this prevent this happening?
Not using any call apps either.
That is odd; I more often see this with incompatible files or when the files are on the SD card. In your case it looks like it may be a software issue in which case I would advise running a software repair:
1. Download the PC Companion software from http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
and install it on your PC.
2. Install and open PC Companion then select Support Zone.
3. Phone Software Update.
4. Start.
5. Repair Phone
6. Continue
7. Accept data removal
8. Next
9. Wait for prepare
10. Select Phone
11. Follow the connection steps

Ever more odd - my wife has the same phone and has the same problem! I will look at the software repair link - will that erase all my existing data?
and I also am using iMac if that makes any difference?
Sorry, repairing on a MAC would involve using other software:
Here are the basic Steps for Bridge for MAC.
Download Bridge for MAC from:
http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/bridge-for-mac/
The phone should not be connected to the MAC. The phone should be off.
After the Download unzip the file and drag the bridge for MAC icon to the Applications folder. (install then use finder to locate icon)
In the Main "No phone connected" window, on the top menu (top application menu) Select "Phone" and scroll down to "Repair phone"
This will open the Phone Software Restore window with the 3 sections for Start, Prepare and Update.
Click on continue bellow. Doing so will popup a window warning you about the loss of your personal info. Click on the checkmark signaling that you understand the data loss situation,
This will take you to the Connection Procedure Screen.
Follow the instructions in the screen and click on continue*.
*One key aspect of the last step to keep holding the indicated button before and after you connect the phone to the MAC until the update starts. IF this is not done correctly then the phone won't connect to the MAC
