Do a settings reset on your phone (or repair your phone using PCC/SUS) and remove the live wallpaper and replace it with a static wallpaper.
What Bluetooth handsfree system are you using? Is it a built-in system or is it a normal handsfree attached around your ear? If it's a Sony handsfree, please let me know which one.
It sounds like this could be a compatibility issue. It's unfortunately not that uncommon for car Bluetooth systems to not fully work with new Android phones.
One good way to start troubleshooting is to contact the manufacturer and see if there's any update available for this Bluetooth system.
Also try to turn off WiFi in the phone if this is one. I've spoken to a customer who had a similar issue. When he turned off WiFi, the problem went away.

I have the same issue with my brand new 62 plate Corsa Active and my 18 month old Sony Ericsson Experia Arc. I'm using Android 2.3.4 and build number 4.0.2.A.0.62 and connect to the car's in built bluetooth using Bluetooth Share.
Connection was no problem, the two are paired, the phone's contact list is displayed fine and I can make and receive calls, but the 'Free Speech' option has to be selected for each and every phone call or else you can't hear the caller and they can't hear me. The menu to activate the free speech is only available when the call has connected, so making outgoing calls is very difficult.
Other threads suggest that an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich will fix it - but I dont know how to upgrade to this (or if it is possible?). Previous advice from other threads has been to download a different Bluetooth app, but there are hundreds available and I don't want to have to go through them all.
Any advice on how to resolve this issue please? The car will last much longer than the phone, so if it can't be resolved I may be tempted away from Sony Ericsson at my next upgrade....

And one more (which I can't find again now) which was closed as we were refered to another open thread which was similar, but not the same issue - this is NOT a connectivity issue, the device is paired to the car, just defaults to the privacy setting when making/receiving phone calls.
