My Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray (ST18i) has been having issues where if the screen goes blank it is hard to revive it. This normally should be solved by either pressing the screen or the home button but now randomly after a call when I take the headset from my ear the screen does not return and will not without a number of quick pushes of the on/off button. For example I have been embarrassed when I have left a message and I could not get the screen back to hang up. This is not a properly functioning phone. I contacted support and they suggested it was a software issue. My phones software was already up to date but dutifully I replaced the software as requested. This resulted me being in an even worse state with my apps and phone layout being in disarray and still the issue of the blank screen. I contacted support again and had the phone sent away for a week. Guess what, they just reinstalled the software and returned it. Well there has been no change. I am often on the phone and when I have finished the call I have to quickly struggle to find a way to revive the phone to hang up. If I have been using the web and put the phone down for long enough for the screen to go blank, then pick it up so after I cannot get the screen to return. You can see the back light is on but the screen remains black.
I must say I cannot recommend the support service. The first call I received showed promise. They suggested they would call back in 2 hours. Nup! I called a day later to tell them that the reinstall was not successful and I wanted it sent away to be fixed. The email said the service centre would email as soon as the phone was received and would keep me up to date. I had no such email contact without me having to chase. Yes it had been received and a technician was working on the issue. I received other emails with links that didn’t work etc.
The problem appears to be a common experience on the forums. I would have thought Sony would have taken more care in solving my issue.
Now my problem is that it is a hassle to get the screen to come on and randomly it is an embarrassment, but far less of a hassle than getting the phone sent away only to someone to do what I have already done and not solve the problem! This is probably what Sony are hoping the people with this issue do. Ignore it and eventually get a new phone.(Probably not a Sony)
My phone was great for more than a year and a half , now it is not functioning well as a phone or as an internet device. What can you suggest I do to get problem this fixed?
I'm sorry to hear that reinstalling the phone software didn't fix the problem and not even after a repair center visit.
I suggest that you contact your local support team to raise this and check how you can proceed in the best matter.

I followed up and have sent the phone away again. This time it am hoping a real solution may be found.
I found the Sony support very inflexible though. I have had this "repaired" already, in plenty of time before going away for an extended period. Unfortunately I dont think I will be back in the country before the warranty runs out, so I was put into the position with no choice to send it back, without any guarantee of getting the phone back before I go away. Crossing fingers they can properly fix it before I leave, if not I will have to buy a new phone! Ridiculous! They should have fixed it the first time!
Hi Johan,
I would really be interested in your answers to 3rddoor and Anwin. It seems that this is a very common problem with the Xperia Ray - I have it too! My phone is then 'off' for minutes if not hours before it can be used again! The technicians have tried their luck but to no avail. Their best bet was to go for a new screen - but if Sony Support doesn't even know whether it is the screen or the software - what shall we common users do???
I would really appreciate a comprehensive answer!
I have the same problem, phone is 3 years old, it has all the latest software, and when I use my PC to connect the phone to the support site to get any updates or whatever, it does not work because you have to switch your phone off and in doing so..ooops up comes this problem, so the support site is no use. Just take the battery out and put it in again after a pause and press on, check you still have the correct date and time without which you get "cannot make a safe connection" , then set timeout to 30 mins that make you ok for 30 mins, once it times out the problem happens again. Sorry no solution, New phone but not a Sony
I have a similar problem and I need to know that is there a solution for this problem?
Thanks
I THINK ITS AN MANIFACTURER DEFECT BUT SONY DIDNT CALLBACK ITS CUSTOMERS..NEW LAW HAS TO BE ADDED TO RPLACE DEFECTIVE PARTS LIKE IN VEHICLES,EVEN NO SERVICE CENTER IS READY TO REPAIR THE DEVICE AND ITS WASTE OF MONEY....WILL SEARCH FR POSSIBLITES TO COMPLAIN IN CONSUMER COURT...
