I used to be able to control phone mute from the volume up/down button but since the latest update I'm unable to do that, how do I get that back?

Hi @Charlieboy160, let me see if I can answer your question. 

In Android 9.0 (Pie), the volume keys will only adjust the media volume. This is different from previous versions of Android, where ringtone volume was the default setting.

There is no way to change this setting in Android Pie. However, there is a toggle button for the three ringer modes (full ringer mode, mute and Do not disturb) just above the on-screen volume slider, which lets you turn the ringer off and on with a single tap. During calls, the volume keys will adjust the speaker volume for call audio, and the on-screen volume slider will show an additional column for this.

Thank you very much for your reply, this seems a very backward step as it was so handy to hit the volume button to mute or put on vibrate. Typical update!

I am sorry that you feel that way. There may exist third party apps in Play Store that allow you to change the mapping of the volume keys. Please note though that we cannot guarantee that they will work.

According to Google,whilst the default setting in Pie is to control media it is up to each manufacturers design team if it is implmented and how it is implemented, this certsinly agree with what I know about the process from stock android to retail unit, keyboardsare replaced launchers changed etc

So, basically I am stuck with it being a media volume button I'll never use 🙄
