Vista upgrade sound problems

Hi, experiencing PC rage at the moment - just upgraded my Vaio laptop (FE31Z) to Vista Home Premium and updated the audio drivers as instructed and now I have no sound! SigmaTel audio codec driver version 6.10.0.5290. Maxxed out speaker volume in BIOS incase that helped but nothing does. Even the search on these forums doesnt work (or no one has this problem??) I can't believe I'm the only one so has anyone come up with a soultion?? I miss my music :slight_frown: Please help.

P.S. Sony, you need your butts kicked for this one.

I had the same problem upgrading from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate. Many people with the Sigmatel driver have experienced the same thing. For some, uninstalling the driver , rebooting and re-installing has worked.

For me that did not work. I just forced Windows to use the Windows Generic HD Audio driver which worked fine.

In this instance it is not a Sony issue as all laptops with Sigmatel seem to suffer from this.

Thank you Joe! I'll try that till there's a working Vista sound driver.

For most people uninstalling the sound driver in Device Manager and re-booting seems to do the trick. What happens is that Vista installes it's generic driver by default - which does not work. Uninstalling and re-booting seems to reinstall the Sigmatel driver. Alternatively choose 'Update Driver' from Device Manager and choose to install it manually -> Have Disc -> and browse to the directory with the Sigmatel driver.

Upgrading to Vista causes untold problems. It leaves far too many programs and utilities in place that are incompatible with Vista. A clean install seems the much safer bet - the Sony express upgrade is in fact a clean install.
