VGN-FW11M speakers not working

Hi was wondering if someone can help me, ive only had my laptop for 3 weeks now (brand new from pc world) and the speakers have stoped working. Basically the laptop was working perfectly 4 days ago when it was last used, i turned it on today and the speakers arn't working. If i plug in a set of head phones though i get sound, also the sound mixer is actually showing that theres sound being produced but theres nothing come through the speakers.

I've tried checking my settings to make sure thats the phsycal mute button wasnt pressed on the laptop and to check that the software mute wasn't pressed either. I've also disabeled and then renabled the realtec options in device manager. And i've also tried to update the drivers in device manager but nothing seems to be working.

So if anyones got any ideas it would be much appreciated.

Sorry i couldn't find an edit button so i've had to add this on.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver to make the realtec thing work, but that didnt work. I've also tried doing a system restore to just over a week ago when i deffinatly know the laptop speakers were working,thats not worked either.

So again if anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated, thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi,

Generally the speakers on your laptop are connected through the headphone socket, so if your headphones work then so should your internal speakers and no amount of driver re-installing would cure the problem.

Your problem will more likely be hardware, did your speakers stop working after you tried headphones? If so then there is a problem with the headphone socket that makes and breaks the signal to the internal speakers. There may be a small amplifier to increase the level to the internal speakers after the headphone socket that could have failed but again this will be hardware.

Hopefully PCWorld will replace the laptop for you as you have had it less than 28 days.

Hmm yeah last time i used the laptop and it was working i did try the headphone socket.

BTW i got my dates wrong from checking the receipt i actually got the laptop on the 7th january, it has barley been used though. Were do i stand, can i swap it for a new one ?, or do i have to send it of to sony to get it repaired ?.

EDIT: I've actually got a feeling that its the amplifier that's broke, because noticed now that there is sound coming through the speakers but it's incredibly quiet barely audible in fact. You have to be in a silent room to actually be able to hear the sound through the speakers.

So if it is the amplifier would this be caused by E.S.D. by someone not wearing anti-static straps properly or even not at all ?.
