VGN-A397XP and RAM UPGRADE

Hi all, First post on here.... have read many many posts on here and they have been quite informative and helpful! Thanks guys!!

I currently own a PCG-Z1SP and have ordered a VGN-A397XP from SonyStyle, and shud recieve it in the next week :smileygrin:; however, on sony's website (http://vaio.sony-europe.com/PageView.do?site=ite_en_GB&page=ProductTechnicalFeatures&section=Product...) it clearly states that the RAM is upgradeable to a maximum of 1GB. On Vaio-link (http://www.vaio-link.com/tutorials/memory/memory.asp?l=en&m=1806&c=0) it states that the RAM is upgradeable to 2GB.

Crucial.com ( http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=Sony%2BVAIO+VGN-A+Models&mfr=Sony&ca...) (a wicked site! and can highly recommend them!!) also state 2GB RAM as a maximum. After speaking to both Vaio-link & Crucial - I am still none the wiser as to what the maximum amount of RAM can be installed. I was wondering if someone on this forum cud shed some light on the matter.

Also, if I was to upgrade to 1GB RAM wud I need to replace the existing Sony installed RAM? or, just slot the new 512MB in?

My display resolution is limited to 1024X768. If you write a post you can see a button like these "http://". Please, next time click this button, tipe a name of the link (for example "RAM") click ok and typ the link address.


Infinion and Transcend builds Notebook RAM with 1GB. If you have the money, I don't know.

This depends on what has been factory fitted, but the chances are both slots are full. Download and install Everest Home Edition. Have a look under Motherboard > chipset, this will show what you have fitted at present.

The A397XP comes with 2 slots.... one slot has 512MB already installed.

In that case Crucial should be able to supply you with a compatible 512MB chip to place in the other slot.

BTW unless you know that as FACT it is worth checking that the specification is the same as reality, before you part with any of your hard earned money!

Hi Rich912,

Will take your advice (seeing as the spec sheet differs in max size of RAM!) and wait for the unit to arrive, then install Everest to ensure I purchase the right RAM from crucial.

If VAIO Link say 2GB then I would follow their lead as they update their specs more often than SonyStyle
