Still stuck, months on!

Some of you will remember me from when I posted this:

Symptoms: 

If I play Media Player, Real Player, Internet TV/Radio on Winamp, Sonicstage or indeed any style of media player, it keeps randomly jumping and distorting on tracks and that, like a dodgy cd if you must... 

At the same time, if I am online and scrolling down a screen or what like, the screen freezes and distorts also... 

Best way I can describe it is like someone with a nervous twitch? 

Now I have ran Norton, SpySweeper and AdAware scanners and all seems to be clear! 

No corrupted files either as its happened with all 6 DVD's we've rented from BlockBuster this week and on brand new CD's! 

ANY IDEAS what is causing this? It happened before but sorted itself out! Now it's back again! 

In case it helps it's a few months old Sony Vaio Laptop 60gb HDD Pentium 4 thingymibobber and 512RAM and <profanity removed by moderator>, it's fine otherwise! 

After this, I will request help with settings on my firewall etc but thats another thing, it's no good surely just switching it off so I can use Apps online etc etc... being behind the University LAN firewall doesn't reassure me either!

It's still doing it! Even more so these days! It's driving me insane... anyways, thinking of trying a FORMAT on the machine, but was wondering on what all I'll need and how can i save my files, i have to hard drives, could i put them all on one, format then onto the other, then format the other one? If so, how do i do that?

Hey Beam, long time no speak mate, how you been?

Sounds complicated, if there's a problem with the sound direct from the CD drive and from tracks copied to your HDD then possible probs with the sound card or drivers. If you're having probs with the display as well . . . .

I would suggest that the first thing you do is a complete recovery. It is possible to format the C: drive only - this being where the OS and program files are kept, whilst keeping your data safe(ish) on the 😧 drive. Ideally you should backup all your files onto CD or DVD before recovery.

If this doesn't help then contact Sony.

BTW what machine do you have?

yeh i would have tryed a system recovery for that problem, either restored to factory state or save ypur data backed up on D:\

either do a full restore to make sure u iron out this problem or back all your stuff & virus check it all b4 u put it back on a factory state laptop........ just in case its something u misse

Hi Guys, it's a Vaio PCG-GRT996VP I have, I'm away to tesco's to buy some blank dvd's and store EVERYTHING on them, then I'll do a full systems restore tonight! :smileygrin:

TellingD, yeah, I'm good, yourself? ScottishCruise has gone through another change if you fancy popping by! Been a busy summer this year with all the shows ect, still stuck with the bmw too - dunno what I'm doing, keeping it as a runaround and buying another better condition one to modify is the current plan... alas as usual, money is the barrier... especially being a student... which reminds me, I have a resit next week... and I still havn't found me a flat yet!

Ok so if im getting this right, you have problems whenever you use your CD Drive?

If you can find a new driver on the web support site, install it. Probably your best bet if you can find the drivers.


Open My Computer, right click you cd-drive, click properties, go to the hardware tab, double click your CD-Drive in the list (at this point check the "device status" window for problems if there are any click "troubleshoot"), go to properties tab and Uncheck "Enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device", click ok, then ok. Might fix your audio problems, maybe even you DVD problems too?

Is the laser head in your CD-Drive clean? Might be worth getting one of those CD's with the little brushes on to give it a dusting.

Might wanna try this before system restore, i use system restore as a last resort (ie if computer doesnt run)

Aye, Nifty, it isn't just the CD/DVD drives, though I will clean the lens later (Can do no harm I 'spose!) It's also happening whether I'm playing a media player, browsing the net, or whatever... playing games even, something always freezes.

I also get a Sony Framework UNUP or something failure notice too - mean anything to you guys?

Anyways, I bought the blank dvd's - 25 for £7, not bad I think.

Right well, finally done the whole systems recovery thing after backing up all my mp3's and so on onto dvd's and I'm pleased to say that for the moment, all seems swell!

I hope it stays that way... quite pleased to have completely eradicated all traces of adware hanging about!
