We have had three instances in the last month of allegedly 'new' Cliés being bought by customers who subsequently find that these are not what they seem.
The biggest problem was found when one had to be returned to Sony for repair only to find that this had in fact been stolen. We have assisted the authorities in this case but we also found out that Sony also does a check on the ownership of a Clié before any other work is carried out.
If a Clié has been previously owned, you MUST get a formal letter from the seller with their name, address and post code to accompany the PDA and they must send a case on Clié-link to get ownership transferred to you. Without this even non-warranty work will not be carried out until you can prove that you legitimately own the device.
There are Cliés still in the reseller channel and they are also appearing on eBay that are new and the genuine article. Every Clié box has a Sony security sticker which should not appear damaged in any way. If it is, then the box has been opened and you should be cautious. The last two Cliés in the series were the NZ90 and the UX50. Anything earlier is AT LEAST two years old.
Clies are still highly useable and still 'state of the art'.
