Just got a PCG-SR11K (second hand) with Win XP on it:
first thing I did: formating and trying to install Win2k Pro
everything worked fine - I installed all the VAIO drivers (from the homepage) -
all the hardware is recgognized expect:
- I have no sound (even I installed the VAIO sound-driver as described in the info-file) (but the Yamaha sound card is found and all the sound is turn on)
-I do not have the hotkeys (FN-functions) anymore!
-the JogDial is installed (with the litte icon in the taskbar) but do not respond at all!
I'm also installing all the Windows Patches/Updates and the Sony Shared Libraries!
WHAT can I do?
Did you check what OS the drivers were made for? Sony are VERY specific about what goes on their laptops when it ships, and if it wasn't made to come with Win2k then chances are that drivers/software to make these things work only came with XP. And as we have all no doubt painfully found out at some point, XP does not cross-pollinate well with other OS's.
My suggestion to you, should nobody post a better solution than mine, is that you reinstall XP as the main OS, then partition your hard drive and install Win2k on a different partition, so that you can boot up with either OS. (Press F8 for boot options at boot up). If you don't know how to get a dual boot going, google it, there will be plenty of guides out there better than I can write, although since you only just reformatted i guess there isn't much that you will lose.
Not the best solution, however XP backwards compatability is unfortunately not the best in the world, and at least if sound is essential to what you are doing you will have the option to work it, presuming there's no easier way of doing it.
I would stick with Windows XP myself, better support from Sony.
All the SONY VAIO drivers I downloaded/installed were specific for W2k!
Is there a problem in general with W2k or did just I do some mistakes?!
I found some sound driver for the soundcard (Yamaha) at their homepage - gonna try them once at home! -
Having sound would be the most inportant - if the JogDial don't work wouldn't be as tragic
I already did 3 partitions - but with only 10 GB of harddisk, I don't wanna loose space with two Operating Systems (espacially Win XP *gg*)
My Question should have been:
IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE HAVING Windows 2000 running on this notebook? and if yes HOW DID HE DO IT?? (what driver did he use?)
In my opinion Windows XP and 2000 are so similar.
But if you need 2k then I am sure it's more than possible.
Well - this weekend I reinstalled Win2k!
and *WOW*
the JogDial suddendly works fine!!!
I still have the problem with the drivers of the USB-memory stick - but this doesn't matter- I wont use it.
The enoying part is that the sound still don't work too!! I tried to install the SONY W2k drivers - I tried to install the drivers of the YAMAHA Homepage -
the strange thing is that the device is recognized and installed - but that I just don't hear any sound!
Hi,
Sony should have USB MS drivers for the drive, check vaio-link.com
As for the sound I got my driver from Windows Update and it works well.
