I am trying to restore using the supplied Sony CD's a PCG-FX702 laptop which belongs to my cousin, when using the CD it gets to about 5o% of CD 1 and about 15% of Restoring Drive C: before it stops with the following error. 'Unknown error occured' click ok , then get this message: 'Cannot normally finish recovery. This utility will exit and your computer will reboot.
Now i think the problem is one of three things, duff restore CD, something wrong with the CD Drive or a problem with the hard disc. I can't really try the 1st two options but if i knew how to get at the hard disc i could borrow one from another laptop to see if i can boot or restore from that.
Can someone please offer me some help in finding a way to resolve this.
Hi Luke and welcome.
I can only find the disassembly instructions for the PGC-FX501 but it should be similar: -
http://www.cs.bath.ac.uk/~jpc/vaio/
The other thing to try is to COPY the original discs - this can sometimes help.
Can you get into the BIOS with F2 at boot? If so try resetting the BIOS Defaults.
Good Luck.

Right i have tried a new hard disc in the computer (or one borrowed from a Dell and i get the same problem , same errors!!
I also get Recovery.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "Ox77f5222c" referenced memory at "0x3899afac". The memory could not be "written".
Click OK to terminate the program , has anyone any idea what this means?
I have not tried copying the CD's yet but will try this next.
Okay.... i am guessing the restore CD's are a problem , failed on both hard discs.
When i tried to copy them through nero on my main computer they had a read error message....
I am now using a Dell Windows XP Pro CD on the laptop and at the moment it seems to be restoring fine. Problem is i don't know what was supplied with the laptop , the certificate on the bottom doesn't give anything away, i suspect it was Home. So i may have problems activating Windows.
So next question i have it seems the CD's are faulty, although they look like new!! How do i go about getting some replacement CD's ?
Hi Luke0380,
you will need to contact Vaio-Link to purchase a new set of recovery DVD's..:smileysad:
