Have you defragmented your hard-drive, this needs to be done regularly in order to keep your files easily accessible by the OS.
Also, download CCleaner, this free programme gets rid of rubbish files that can slow a computer down, it also cleans your registry, click yes when it prompts you to backup changes to the registry, just to be on the safe side!
Your system may be infested with spyware, known to slow systems down. Run a free online scan here
Norton security products are also notorious for slowing things down, it just gets fatter with each update, if you have it installed, you might want to consider changing...

I always find that working out what programs and data you actually use usually helps (delete and uninstall the ones you don't).
A sure fire way to speed things up (if a little drastic) is to recover your VAIO to its factory settings and reinstall the stuff you need and the files you want. This will make sure that the registry is nice and clean and it'll be as fast as the day you bought it. (Don't trust registry cleaners personally).
