How funny!!! I came on to ask the exact same thing for my friend who bought his sony vaio the other day.

He phoned up the shop and they said the 64 missing was being used for the video card. Sounds like a fob off to me but who knows, I have an NV109M which is over 2 years old now and it runs faster than my friends brand new machine, though i did upgrade to 512. Still 2 years on that should not be.

Ugrading is quite simple, you should have a chip in your laptop that is 256 in a bay on the bottom of your vaio. There is room next to it for another 256 chip, to give you 512 (definitely recommended). Best bet is to buy off the crucial website. I got my 256 ram for about £40, though i havent checked the prices recently. You can self install via the instructions and are advised to get an anti static wrist band when handling the ram to avoid damaging it. Also make sure you get the right ram eg mine was DDR SDram

When you click properties on my computer it should say 256 ram in my mind, can anyone answer this.

cheers

If the computer is using some of the system RAM as video memory - ie it is 'shared', then system properties will display the amount of memory available after the video memory has been taken.

Ok that makes sense BUT

i think that is very crafty, surly in breach of trades description, ie a big sticker on the laptop saying 256 ram.

the video memory is 128, if the user never plays games or uses it to the full, will the system ram use 256 or always 192? sounds a bit confusing but if it were me, id want that 64 fro system and not for video.

Computer companies always advertise their gear in the best way for them

It's a bit like the hard disk size issue that we've seen people complaining about - 40Gb drives only having 35 useful gigs.
