Fan Noise S1XP / Temp monitoring

Hi all I have just bought a new Sony S1XP. It¿s great! Well sort of. The fan noise is unbearable though. The fan seems to run almost constantly even when I'm not doing anything.

The notebook doesn't even seem to get warm so I don't understand why the fan is constantly running?? It¿s very noisy!

I know centrino chips are able to cope with high temperatures with out any trouble so I don't understand why the fan has to always be running.

Does anyone know how I can monitor the temp of the processor?? and adjust the temperature that it is allowed to get to before the fan kicks in? Any help would be very very welcome!

A very annoyed sound engineer.

Chris

This is only a guess but I reckon if you change the temperature at which your fan kicks in, you would invalidate the warranty. In fact i'm positive Sony would be seriously unimpressed if you met trouble.

The fan is I belive controlled by the motherboard, and really it would probably be quite a lot of trouble to change unless some helpful soul has found a way already.

I know it's annoying but my advice is to live with it, there ain't many techies who would recommend reducing cooling.

Yep, I wouldn't worry about it, ignore the fan and listen to music.

I use Hmonitor (www.hmonitor.com) to monitor my S1XP temperature. It recommends alerting you when CPU temp goes above 75C. I get alerts after approx 25mins continuous 100% CPU usage, and faster if using the graphics card intensively. Hmonitor should be able to control the fans, but I have not been able to do this successfully.

The S1XPs thermal environment does seem to be tight; for a laptop deliberately marketed at the games sector (as the only difference between it and the S1VP is the graphics card), Sony can hardly claim that it is not intended for games, and the laptop does appear to become overheated after extended usage.

The best cooling method I have found is to raise it over a tray of water, which helps keep the air around the laptop cooler.

Has anybody contacted Sony about the S1XP thermal environment?

I have about the same temperatures. They vary between 4o to 77 degrees. The laptop does tend to overheat alot. It's to hot to keep on your lap for extensive use. I going to have the S1XP checked as soon as I get back from holiday.
The fan seems to keep running continuosly when I have it plugged in. My S1 seems less noisy when I have it on battery. Maybe cuz it puts the CPU in adaptive mode. Try some settings in your VAIO Power Management.
Good luck all S series users! Try to keep ya posted when I sent mine to Sony.:smileysad:

Yeah the same with the GRX, when I have it in battery mode it's quieter and less hot ... which can be handy
