dead VAIO

My VAIO seemed to have a MAJOR error this morning:

Machine was on. Sitting on desk.
Connected with wireless (firewall office network).
Running off the battery (full charge I believe).
I plugged it into the AC source (using supplied VAIO lead).
As it was connected the machine seemed to crash. The screen went black and it is not responding to any input.
The power light is on (green).
The battery light is on and not flashing (orange).
The power switch has no effect (pressing or holding).
The machine cannot be powered down or reset. Remove the battery and put it back and the two lights come back on.

Any ideas? I'm discussing with Sony support, but wondered if anyone has had issues with dead VAIO's after plugging into the AC source.

Any info much appreciated.

Sounds familiar. I've been having problems getting my Vaio to even boot up - takesup to 25 attempts. And, then, it sometimes just seizes up for no apparent reason. This freezing sometimes happens when power save features kick in. Only six months old and this Vaio was a huge mistake.

Hold down the power button for 5 seconds

Check if you have a tiny whole on the bottom of your laptop.
If yes, you found the Hardware Reset button. Use a very small screwdriver to access the button. Press it and hopefully it'll work again.
