Dead Hard Drive

Mother has reported a dead laptop (NV109). Has tried restoring XP from 2 sets of copied recovery disks (I have the originals here).

Each time, it gets to about 76% then a blus screen about inccompatible image (or something like that

A freind suggests that the hard drive is buggered (an industry term, I beleive !!).


OK, so if the hard drive needs replacing, a few questions to those who have done it. I have no probs with the physical side of open laptop surgery.

1:/ A good supplier of hard drives? Any recommendations?

2:/ Any problems with using a new hard drive - any problems with the recovery disks? Will the recovery process notice a different hard drive in situ?


A freind is happy to try a "retail" XP home installation but I recommend sticking with the original "Sony XP" as this is likely to be tweeked to match the laptop, let alone finding all the utilities to get the screen and keyboard working correctly.

I will also refit the original memory - before buying the new hard drive, just incase the "image" problem is related to the larger amount of memory in place.

Apparently the hard drive died as part of a Norton update. As the update was being downloaded and installed, The update said that an old version was being used. Then the screen goes blank and it comes up with a message saying the hard disc is corrupted.
Dead ever since.

Anyone else with Norton problems?
