I set up a wireless network between my S2XP and my earlier Vaio, both with WindowsXP Pro SP2. It works fine. But I couldn't do the same with my Windows98SE PC - though there is already a satisfactory wireless network between my old Vaio and the Windows 98 PC. After testing (Net Diagnostics and ping, etc.), I found that my S2XP couldn't ping either itself or the PC.
Then the problem got curiouser and curiouser. I got the wireless network between the two Vaios running. No problem, working well both ways. Then I did Net Diagnostic and ping tests on the S2XP. Same failure!! It can't ping either itself or the other Vaio - even though the Network is working fine. In other words, it appears as if TCP/IP on my S2XP is not working - yet the network still functions.
Does this mean that the two Vaios with XP Pro are using some other protocol than TCP/IP to communicate, but poor old W98 can't do that?
Should I reset my TCP/IP settings and try again? Any ideas?
If you have a firewall check it's allowing access to the Win9x machine
Thank you. Both the Windows and Norton (bundled software) Firewalls are turned off. Any more ideas?
did you try to used a network cable first? to see if its working? instead of just using wireless?
