My uncle gifted me this phone a month back from Dubai UAE, i am using it in India. Since then i have been struggling to update the phone to ICS but the PC Companion, Sony xperia Update, and the phone itself says that it already has the latest software. I contacted the customer support in India , they told me that the problem might be because the phone is purchased from other country. I contacted the UAE support Service they told me the same procedure for update, along with message that updates are released for particular SI number, Mine is 1261-8812.6
Please let me know, will my phone will be updated or i should go for another phone.

you have 2 options
1) wait
or
2) manually update your phone
1) you have to wait for the update to be approved in UAE and released

Hey sharuk i'm also facing the same problem. i had brought xperia u from uae and i'm hardly trying to update it i had visited sony service center also, there is no solution did u get any help or the way how to update. can u pls help mee.....!
Try update it manually using Flash Tool
hello,
There isn't any way rather to flash it. I have flashed mine with 6.1.1.B.1.54 firmware, working absolutely fine. You can find the ftf file over the net and flash it using flashtool. Its quite easy and also you do not need to unlock the bootloader as it is the stock ROM not Custom. So, no worries about warranty
Hope this will help
hi im not techy in the first place, i've had my xperia U since june 2012, i updated it to ics last november 2013 and after that my phone started slowing down with how it responds to my tap and swipe, apps tend to force close or sometimes freeze up on me, and after that the recent issue ive had is it automatically restarts and stats on the "XPERIA" screen then restarts over and over... i found a solution at this site that i need to perform a factory reset using PC companion and i did so after that i reinstalled the update to ics again but that didnt fix my issue, after a week i encountered again the same restart and xperia screen again, my phone was never been dropped nor exposed to liquid... can u help me???? if i knew that this is what the ics would give me i shudnt have updated and stayed with gingerbread
