Xperia mini (ST15i) - a blinking screen (issue?)

Hi all,

The screen of my Xperia mini (ST15i) is frequently blinking in an annoying way. It looks as if the brightness was automatically adjusted by the phone, but the environment ambient light is not changing, and the screen keeps adjusting which results in slight but very fast and quite unpleasant blinking of the whole screen. Sometimes the blinking stops, sometimes it is faster and more evident, sometimes it is lighter and easier to cope with. The blinking sometimes stops by itself, sometimes stops when you just reposition/bend the phone slightly.

The phenomenon shows up regardless of brightness and backlight settings, the switching of the mobile BRAVIA engine on or off also seems to have no impact. However, the feeling is most unpleasant when the backlight is off anf the brightness is set to minimum.

Otherwise, the screen seems to be OK.

Is this something like a "known feature" (I made a quick search, but found no such exact problem), or do you think that my unit is faulty?

Hi ! Your unit works ok. Thats the way our xperia mini works. I also have this issue, but I got used. As you have confirmed, repositioning the phone sometimes help. Thats the way ambient sensor works. Nothing you can do.

Since Im using application invisibright (free) it works much better and blinking is not so noticable and not anoying.

Try the application I mentioned and see if it helps. So when I want to adjust brightnes I just pull the notification bar and set the desired brightness.

When need automatc brightness again I just tap on brightness widget (other application) and set the brightness to auto. When the brightness is set to automatic via widget... the blinking is noticable. When using automatic brightness its set the brightness to 39% by default. In most cases when not out on the direst sun I use 29% brightness and this contribuite to battery save also.

You cant fully disable an automatic brightness feature althought you select various values from widgets or other applications.

Well you can but involves rooting. The sensor will always try to adjust the light in some way.

Using invisibright application you will se big improvements and maybe you will find your problem solved or not annoying anymore Slightly_smiling_Face

NO its not faulty.

Thanks for your answer.

I have just found a similar post here:

Did SONY think about fixing the problem by enabling to switch the automatic brightness off or by means of some averaging of the sensor's readings?

Don't know. For now you can use the tips I have provided to you. Check and see if its good for you.

If SE planed to fix this, would be fixed by now when ICS is out. So I don't think SE see this as a problem or issue.

Hi 😉

Using invisibright gives me instant brightness setting control, but the screen is still blinking ;-).

It would be nice if SONY could add a setting to DISABLE the auto-brightness completely.

What brightness widget do you use?

I use Power widget pro, but here is a free version:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=at.abraxas.powerwidget.free&hl=sl

I use widget where I have 3 levels of brightnes... full brightness, half or automatic.

on the GB, blinking of the screen is so annoying that you can notice it well. Fortunately, when the ICS came, I observe that the annoying blinking of the screen is loss... Slightly_smiling_Face
