Why is "Focus mode" icon inactive?

Five days ago I bought Sony Xperia S. When it is in normal capturing mode and I press its menu, its "focus mode" is just showing "face detection" as a gray inactive icon (as you can see from the attachment which is directly its screen shot).

Does anyone know what I have been missing out or what the problem is?

Although I read the user guide, also, searched from this forum discussions and looked all the other menus and sub-menus on the phone, I could not have found the solution to turn "the gray inactive focus mode" into "the black active form" in order to reach its full functions other than face detection.

Can anyone help me to sort this issue out?

you have to remove smile recon. then your focus works
