update problem for xperia s

hi firstly I am sorry I am new at this.... My phone tells me I have a update to do.  When trying to update with pc companion it gets to the point where is says to turn off phone then reconnect usb while holding the volume down key, but it has already turned the phone off during the check phone stage.  When I try to connect the usb and hold the key it does nothing.... Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem with pc companion?? Help!!!
