Network and connection

Hi guys

just got my xperia U. i am dazzled with the network settings. Could someone explain how i could see if my phone is on 3G network? It doesn't say anything on the notification bar. my settings are data enabled checked, data roaming off, network mode wcdma (preferred)/gsm.

if i turn roaming off, would i be using 3g network?

what is gps then? when should i turn it on/off?

i am on orange in the UK.

Hi Tsering,

WCDMA is basically 3g network, so according to your settings it would be on 3g signal whenever possible. When the data is on (data enabled), you should be seeing the 3g/H icon in your status bar.
If the 3g network is not available due to the bad signal, then you can see G or E icon.
These all mean that you are connected to the internet and using your data plan. (and they have little arrows next to them too)
If there aren't any letters in your status bar then either you are connected to wifi and have wifi icon instead, or your APNs aren't configured correctly.
In this case, go to settings > xperia > internet settings and download settings for internet and mms.

GPS is location service and you don't need it on unless you're using navigation.

As for roaming, I suggest you keep that unchecked at all times to prevent unwanted expenses.

do you see a 3G or H icon ? do you have the correct APN settings?

I guess i am fine then. I do have the 3G/H with arrows. I didn't see them when my wi-fi was on. When I switch wi-fi off, H comes back.

I don't see the icon when my wi-fi is on. I didn't know that. Once i switch the wi-fi off, the H/3G icon comes back.

so i guess i am safe. I dont know what APN is.

that's normal, if you are on wifi you won't be able to see either or, as you are not using your data plan.

APN

Settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > access point names
