If you have internet connection in laptop not via wifi (i mean you may get internet connection via Ethernet port or USB dongle), you can easily set your laotop as a wifi hotspot with the above mentioned software tool
http://www.virtualwifirouter.com/. My frient is using this tool without any problem.
If you have 3G in your mobile, you can share it via mobile's inbuild wifi hotspot facility or via USB Cable (you must enable USB tethering).
If any further info needed, post here.
.
What type of internet connection do you have on laptop? Wired / USB Dongle / Wifi?
if you are running on win7, you can try this

hey kumar just had a crazy idea dunno whether that can be done! :smileymischief:
is it possible to use wifi from xperiu along with LAN cable on my laptop?
this will increase the internet speed on my laptop significantly!

LAN cable is used for broadband internet i think.
LAN cable is used for connecting telephone lines to modem in household.
in my college there are points where you can insert the LAN cable & connect the other end of the cable to laptop.
I don't ask that way. We can only connect Micro USB cables with Xperia U. You can share your WiFi internet via USB cable(to laptop/PC/Custom build Gadgets) after enabling USB tethering.
But, if you want to connect via Ethernet port for any reason, you may need additional converters! That may cost you and may decrease the speed. Also, i'm not sure about the success of this method because Xperia U may use different method to connect with USB port using its drivers.
As a result, you better use USB cable only!
