From Nokia to Sony.. to Symbian and Android, with OVI Suite and PC Companion!

I have been an avid Nokia fan for almost 12 years now, and never owned a phone that was beyond Symbian S60.

Recently I decided to update 'my life'.. i HATE A**le and all it's products! And I will not go down the BB road, coz it's a bit too common and limited in terms of compatibility with apps. (Besides, the former two mentioned, are fruits; not electronics manufacturers)

So I went with my beloved brand.. Sony! And to my luck they were running Android! The most versatile and open source option out there.

I fell in love with my Xperia S 😃

Anyway.. it took me 3 or 4 days to try and connect my new Xperia S to my PC and finally copy all my contacts and sms messages from my N86. It was torture to say the least!

Which brings me to my first concern: Sony PC Companion: What the sh*t is this?!! Seriously, what does it give me? Backup & Restore? Copying of some media files?? Windows can do that alone with no additional software!

OVI/Nokia Suite is 100000000 times more advanced! How come?? You can organize/edit/transfer conacts, sync/send/organize sms (by folders), backup, restore, update, install apps, get GPS maps, sync calendar and EVERYTHING else with lots of options (oh and before I forget, I can connect via BLUETOOTH!).. and all of that can be viewed ON the PC (unlike the fully online interface of PC Companion), in a very clean and convenient layout. So what the hell is PC Companion's use? Just phone update? Show me a video on how to connect my phone? It is also very buggy and fussy to connect the the phone. And please tell me how and why on Earth is it not possible to connect via Bluetooth?

I downloaded Mobile Go by Wondershare (as it was an essential part of brining back my contacts from Nokia phone), and even that old thing doesn't allow me to edit conacts and fields the way I was used to from OVI/Nokia suite.. Such a shame.. really.

Also... I thought it would be a good chance to SYNC ONCE AND FOR ALL! With gmail account and facebook and all that jazz... I did auto-sync and synced via PC Companion.. but when I go online and open my gmail Conacts, there is just nothing there! Slightly_frowning_Face Facebook went fine though.

Is there an upgrade coming soon for Sony PC Companion? It needs A LOT of buffing up!

If not, can anyone recommend a free third party PC software to manage conacts and stuff from the Xperia S?

Thank you.. and sorry Sony.. but you have a long way to go on that 'PC Companion'

Thank you for your input on PC Companion.

If you're looking for a tool which can sync your PIM data locally I suggest that you check out My Phone Explorer.

I never felt more stupid... lol. I had actually come across Airdroid while I was exploring the Play Store.. I don't know why I thought it was a cool app and still ignored it!! It's great and easier and lighter than having to install a full client like Moborobo or My Phone Explorer for that matter. But ya, I downloaded all three of 'em and I am now embarking on a test drive!

Thank you very much and it was very helpful!

Any idea if there is a Mac equivalent software?

+1 for disappointed Nokia convert to Sony Xperia. Nokia/Ovi Suite perhaps is the best in class for smartphone PC integration/functionality. I shall miss it.

Thanks for the pointer to MPE. I will check it out also.

Thanks.
