I followed your both suggestions, but not working. Pls tell me whether I need to unstall gmail and reinstall again. Earlier, I also used yahoomail and I was getting notifications for yahoomail alone, but not for gmail. I unstalled yahoomail now. I have now only gmail, but I am not getting gmail notifications. I could not understand the reason. I also restarted the mobile. But not solved. Pls tell some other suggestion. Thanks.
you can't uninstall gmail. Do you have a notification app, or antivirus, taskiller, launcher apps?

I have installed the app ' No Lock' for unlocking screen. Is it making problem?. I also made unable this app.
Other apps 'McAfee Security' and 'LiveWaremanager' are there which are not installed by me. They were already installed by Sony by automatic.
Please let me know what could be the cause?
Thanks. Now it is working. But, there is no sound during notification. I tried to set 'sound' all the ways. It is not responding. I don't know why?
The earlier answers did not answer this for me, but below is a completely nice solution - I suggest you vote it up.
For Android 4.0.4, open gmail on your phone, click the labels button at the bottom, click 'MANAGE LABELS' at the bottom, click Inbox (and later Priority Inbox), check that 'Label notifcations' is ticked, and then chose a Sound. I chose Pop for Inbox and a louder sound for Priority Inbox. Nice.
