I have the Xperia Play r800x with android version 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.E.0.57 and have verizon as a carrier. I descripbed in the "Root all Sony Ericsson smartphone 2.3.2 and up" post, I placed my phone in USB Debugging and tried the UnlockRoot software without success. I received a pop stating "Failed to get shell root!". Am I missing something or need a different program to get into my phone to get some of the bloat stuff out. Thanks.

this is a variant of the Play, it's on its own
you can try SuperOneClick and see if that works with this phone

Sorry, It won't work because you updated it to 2.3.4, I made the post when 2.3.3 was the most recent, i am truly sorry.
as uliwooly said use SuperOneClick Used it on my Play worked perfect done in seconds
I'll try SuperOneClick. Is there a post or site that will tell me what I can remove from the phone that isn't necessary? I know I want to remove some of the initially installed games but I know I read some where there are other programs that are bloating my phone that can be removed safely but can't find that post or link again. Thanks

I tried SuperOneClick and each time the program would go nonresponsive after reaching step #7. Phone is in USB debug and connecvted to PC. Any suggestions?
As stated, SuperOneClick failed to work; however, not sure what happened but now I can no longer receive ring tones or vibrate when someone in my contact list calls. The phone in a since is in silent mode but it isn't. I've gone through the settings and ringer is at max. I just get a screen showing a person calling. Not sure what happened as a results of using the program but is there anyway to totally reset my phone back to the way it was when I first walked out of my carrier's store with it? Not worried about contacts, there's only a few and I can manually replace them if necessary. Thanks for the help.

This maybe a stupid question.
But if I remove some of the horrible bloatware, by rooting my phone. Will I also loose the ability to update it, if Sony magically chooses to update the Xperia Play to ICS or GB 2.3.7
