I am searching from last 2 weeks just to confirm what all earphones are supported by my device.
Because online purchase sites dont tell you what statndard the earphones they are selling.
So the question is , how to come to know which one is supported and which one not without buying . Once bought u cant replace them.
Now I have come to know that my Xperia mini st15i supports OMTP (Sony customer support told so and I am convinced by other blogs). I dint know there is another standard called CTIA till I did some research.
Sony customer support didnt tell about CTIA . They also misguided me about A2DP which is bluetooth standard; however I told them beforeI wanna buy wired earphones.
They give distributor/dealers of Sony products number. What the fuck do they know about technical issues .Those ask me to go to their Sony centre and he will check with some . He dint confirm whether he will replcae "If the earphones I chose after unpacking wont work" in front him only
Sony customer support centre people also wouldnt help telling specifications of their own products .(Even though I had some choices for which they had to tell just 'Yes' or 'No' : for it would be supported or not)Damn it.
I never wasted so much time finding a product . Even its not sure.
I dont wanna buy in hurry and waste earphones.
As SE claims to buy some adapter to make CTIA earphones work , I dont think its good idea because it would wear out soon and there will be some drop at the connection; so you wont get proper music experience
Cell : Sony Ericsson Xperia ST15i mini
Earphones : After so much research seems it only supports OMTP 3.5mm jack
I am very pissed off with Sony , first of all if 3.5 mm is universal why follow some other unique standard. And they dont even help regarding the same
Solved! Go to Solution.
The connection is OMTP, which I think is an ECMA standard. CTIA is a US standard and is not compatible. For earphones only there is no difference, but OMTP and CTIA reverse the microphone and ground connections. The adapter is just a criss cross wired plug and socket.
That seems right. But it doesnt help chossing the right one while buying .
Because online stores/ offline stores dont provide this OMTP/CTIA info unless they are technically strong or even I havent seen "iPhone compatible" tag anywhere either
You can read more about OMTP/CTIA in this thread: http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/31455
Sony Ericsson headsets have the OMTP connection and Sony headset have the CTIA connection.

@prathik calm down, how hard is to check on Sony's website for compatibility?
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-mini/
also it doesn't matter which headphone you get, you can always use an adapter
@Prathik62 I'm having sony ericsson LIVE WITH WALKMAN mobile & it is also OMTP compatible.
After asking the customer support they gave me only this much info even though I clearly mentioned to them that I'm interested in buying Sony MDR-XB30EX Extra-Bass Stereo Headphone which is a product of your own company. C'mon guys don't you people at sony customer service know which category this Sony MDR-XB30EX Extra-Bass Stereo Headphone belongs to. I ain't gonna buy any adapter as adapters will not do justice to the sound quality for which i'm planning to buy Sony MDR-XB30EX Extra-Bass Stereo Headphone.
@Prathik62 Hey dude did you buy Sony MDR-XB30EX Extra-Bass Stereo Headphone?
Is it working with your mobile which is OMTP compatible??
