Thanks.  I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.  I have just tried a full reset using PC Companion - this has NOT worked.  Also, I have seen some posts regarding Live Wallpapaer and that if you disable these and change to a different wallpapaer, this can also get the microphone to work properly.  I have tried this but this also has NOT worked.  I'll post here when I have tried removing the mesh at the bottom of the M2.  Thanks again.

Just tried removing the mesh.  Peeled back the end near the microphone so it was fully exposed and I made a call.  Unfortunately there was no improvement and the sound is still muffled.  Didn't work for me and neither did the Live Wallpaper solution in my previous post.  I'm a bit stumped as to how to improve the microphone, so I'll be off tto the shop where I got the 'phone from to see if they will swap it for one that works properly (i've only had this for 5 weeks!!).  That should be fun and I will let you kow how I get on.  Thanks again for your help.

That happened to me too , started when I installed the update kitkat 4.4.2

I returned to JelyBean 4.3 using flashtool

I dont trust in Sony

They dont do nothing!!!

I accidentaly poked the mic on the rear part. Since then i cannot seem to make phone call or record something. Is there anyway to switch to the primary mic?

Cesar, THANK YOU - I have tried it and it really works. This tip has really saved my phone. Adding link describing how to root the phone without having to unlock the bootloader:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-m2/help/kitkat-root-locked-bootloader-t2927377

- please be carefull as my phone was slightly unstable for a moment after trying that. Now my phone is working again - however I just wonder why do I need to spend the whole night looking for information on the web and reflashing my phone only to get it usable again. I think someone from sony should do his job properly and test the firmware update throughly before it gets released.

It looks like my last smartphone from sony so far...

What is the small hole on the side of the flash at the back? Is that a mic?

Few days ago I've made a horrible mistake - letting new firmware update from sony to be installed on my phone. With the new firmware there came only two changes I have noticed:

1 - the volumes in /system/etc/mixer_paths_VY55.xml have been set back to the values where no one can hear me again

2 - I have lost the root privileges, so I can't fix them anymore

I am totally disappointed and giving up - I am not going to spend another night by fixing what people from sony have spoiled (AGAIN!!!). I am returning it back to vendor and looking forward to get rid of this piece of crap.

But until then - everyone I am calling with and complaining about not hearing me well (so almost everyone) I will keep telling that it is the problem in my smartphone and they should avoid buying one from Sony. Also the message disclaimer automatically appended to outgoing emails ("Sent from my xperia smartphone") should do this job well 😉

I had the same problem with "tinny" sound from my phone to others. I followed the advise on this forum and turned off the background noice reduction. That made it! Now outgoing voice from my phone is clear.
